Santa and the Mrs are getting things ready up North; before you know it, your little one will be asking for a pen and paper (or do they email the big guy these days?) to send their wish list. And I’ll bet you a gingerbread house that one of the items on that list will be one of the many kids’ tablets coming out just in time for this holiday season — after all, kids want what the grown-ups have!

Educational-Centric Kids Tablets

While most kid-friendly electronic devices boast some sort of educational benefit, LeapFrog Technologies and VTech are battling it out for the title of “best consumer-grade learning tablet.” Leapfrog’s offering is the Leapad Explorer and VTech’s the InnoPad. Both come equipped with built-in video recorders and microphones and feature robust edutainment software. (Look out for the Kineo and Kno, too. While they’re not available in retail, yet, your little ones may be bringing them home from school.)

An E-Reader For Budding Book Worms

Nook Color for Kids is this season’s hot kid-friendly e-reader. It works just like a regular Nook or Kindle, with a few interactive extras for the little ones. Through the Nook, you can access thousands of children’s book favorites and kids can interact with the stories – it’s guaranteed to kick start any child’s love of literature and learning.

For The Up-And-Coming Picassos and Pollocks

Encouraging creativity is just as important as getting a jump-start on phonics and mat. THQ’s uDraw game tablet has been dubbed “kiddie Photoshop.” A multipurpose tablet, uDraw plugs into a video game console (XBox 360, Nintedo Wii and PlayStation 3); whatever is drawn on the tablet appears on the television screen! The pixel-resolution is impressive and the color-choices limitless. Built in shapes and features add to the fun.

The best way to get your hands on these tablets in time for Christmas is to order online. Besides, isn’t it much more pleasant to do your holiday shopping in the comfort of your own home rather than fight the crowds?

Bottom line: the must-have kids’ gifts for Christmas 2013 are tablets! My advice: pick yours up sooner rather than later. In a couple of weeks ads will flood the market, supplies will diminish, and you may land on the dreaded “wait list.” Remember: shop early and online to save.

Has it happened to you yet? Maybe your head was turned when your child grabbed the shiny, beeping, curious-looking rectangle on the table. And, splat! You watched in desperation as your treasured iPad pummeled to the floor.

Children, like adults, are fascinated by electronics. So instead of letting the little ones play with your expensive, adult-friendly iPad, why not buy your child their own tablet PC! Not only are children’s tablets fun for your kids, but they’re also digital learning tools. Better yet, studies show that interactive games jumpstart personal creativity.

LeapFrog, the leader in children’s electronic “edutainment” products, has developed the perfect kid’s tablet PC – the amazing LeapPad.

Perfectly sized for tiny hands, the powerful tablet comes pre-loaded with hundreds of colorful, kid-friendly games and educational videos. A mini, all-in-one media center, the LeapFrog’s tablet PC also features a microphone, camera and video recorder – hey, when your child gets a hold of the LeapPad, you may just discover you’re raising the next Steven Spielberg! Also a child’s e-reader, the LeapPad tablet PC is a great phonics and reading comprehension tutor.

What appears to be magic to kids, this dynamic digital device responds to touch and movement; the screen adjusts to either landscape or portrait just by turning! Also included is a stylus and handwriting applications so your child can practice the long-lost art of penmanship.

Affordably priced at $99.99, with add-on applications priced at only $7.50, the LeapPad Explorer is almost impossible to pass-up. Pre-ordering begins on June 29th.

Introducing Kineo – An Educational Tablet for the Classroom

June 14th, 2011

Brainchild Kineo e-book reader Android Tablet

Copyright © 2010-2012 KidsTablet.com. All rights reserved.
Technology is slowly being integrated into more and more classrooms, which is great news for many young learners. In the past, curriculum’s have focused heavily on auditory education – that is, learning through speaking and listening. But many students are visual and hands-on learners. The use of touchscreen tablets and e-readers in classrooms will enable all students, auditory, haptic and visual, to succeed in the classroom.

Kineo Tablet

Kineo Tablet

Jeff Cameron, President of Brainchild, has been developing educational software for schools for over 15 years. Kineo was designed with the cooperation of teachers and administrators, specifically with the school curriculum in mind. Kineo (meaning “to excite” in Greek) is a 7-inch touchscreen kids tablet and e-reader powered by Android 2.1 technology. It has an 800 MHz processor and built-in security features, allowing parents and teachers total control over website and application usage.

Kineo – Achiever! and GlobalSYNCH Technology

Kineo is a learner-centered tablet and e-reader. It enhances kids’ education without the distractions of other tablets. Facebook, Twitter, and online gaming sites can all be blocked from use. Instead, Kineo supports education by using Brainchild’s Achiever! assessment and standards-based instruction program, designed specifically with elementary and middle school students in mind.

What’s particularly interesting about Kineo is that it gives teachers breathing room. Managing a large classroom can be difficult and it’s often hard to pay attention to 30-plus kids. Inevitably, some kids will slip through the cracks. With Kineo, teachers can manage classrooms much more efficiently and effectively. Kineo’s creative software will evaluate students’ progress, allowing the teacher to focus individually on the high-needs students.

How Does Achiever! Technology Work?

The program, Achiever!, evaluates performance levels and then delivers tutorials to the students. After, it retests the students to determine their level of progress on state standards in mathematics, language arts and science. Students can learn both online and offline. Their teachers can later synch their results with the server-based Achiever! software through technology that Brainchild calls GlobalSYNCH. The web-based interface is convenient and quick, making it that much easier for teachers to manage their classrooms.

Safe and Rugged

Kineo can be programmed to access the internet, but authorized pages can be pre-programmed ahead of time, eliminating risk in the classroom. The Kineo Android tablet is built rugged, with both sustainability and value in mind; school officials, teachers and parents can be confident in their investment. With other tablets there is always the concern of bandwidth issues or screen freezes. Not so with Kineo. Rather than spending class time doing damage control, teachers can focus on the classroom and education without worry. Students are unable to accidentally view inappropriate content, nor can they access program or sites outside of those set up by the teacher. Kineo uses a replaceable, long-lasting battery (up to 12 hours) and plays all multi-media and video files.

iGuy for iPad via Speck

Technology changes quickly these days, but let’s face it, most people can’t afford to replace their high-tech gadgets and gizmos before they’re outdated. And that’s why for every new gadget created there’s a protective device designed to keep it from breaking. This year’s wave of new touchscreen tablets (iPad, Playbook and the like) has been no different. Their arrival has been quickly followed by an endless collection of protective skins, cases and frames. Kid-friendly iPad cases have finally hit the market, making kids happy and parents happier.

Let’s look at who the cases are made for, why you should get one and what to look for. We’ll also take a look at a few of the products currently available on the market.

Who Needs Protective Gear?

As much as technology is changing, so are its users. There are tablets made specifically for babies and toddlers. Touchscreen computers have been made for kids, teens, and even those in be-‘tweens’. Parents are realizing, and quick, that those expensive mobile devices are attractive to most everyone, no matter what their age. Luckily, kid-friendly iPad cases protect your expensive tablet, allowing you to relax while your child plays.

Why Use Protective Gear?

The first and most obvious reason to buy protective gear for your tablet is the sheer cost. Your iPad or Playbook isn’t cheap to replace, but the protective covers are. Kids are accident-prone, and it’s frustrating when they break your expensive toys. Cases, skins, frames – whatever your choice – provide peace of mind.

Tablet cases protect your tablet from

  • Damage during travel
  • Accidental spills
  • Tumbles and drops

Most covers are easy to use and comfortable to hold. They’re also easily washable. It’s proven that kids learn better in a stress-free environment. When you protect your gear, you eliminate worries and anxiety. Relax – your tablet is now safe in their hands.

How do they Protect

While no two tablet protectors are created the same, they all do essentially the same thing – shelter your tablet or mobile device. Here are some qualities you’ll want to look for in your new skin, case or frame. You won’t be able to find a skin that has ALL of these qualities, but you should keep them in mind when you’re shopping.

  • Durability
  • Made with high-density foam or hard plastic
  • Lightweight
  • Grip-able
  • Doesn’t block important ports, controls, or sensors
  • Non-toxic (especially for teething babies)
  • Shock absorbent
  • Sturdy, even on soft and uneven surfaces

Protective gear is cool

The creators of tablet skins and frames are quite clever. They know that, generally, kids don’t like protective gear. So they’ve made them fun, stylish and cool. Some covers are freestanding and even made in the shape of entertaining characters. Kids are forever changing – especially teens and ‘tweens’. With them in mind, companies have designed skins and cases with funky patterns and bright colors. They’re inexpensive, they make kids happy, but best of all, they give parents the peace of mind they deserve. Here are a few of the products currently available on the market:

iGuy iPad Cover

Sure to be a hit with the kids, iGuy is a freestanding foam case for iPads. Protective and fun, iGuy is lightweight, easy to hold, and has grip-able arms to hold. iGuy can stand on his own two feet – even when he’s holding your iPad. How cool is that? Brightly coloured and fun to hold – the kids are going to love iGuy!

Big Grips iPad Frame for Kids

Big Grips is a big, soft, brightly colored protective case made specifically with your child in mind. Big Grips Frame and Stand are made of durable, lightweight foam, protecting your iPad from accidental damage. They’re easy to grab, comfortable to hold, and highly grip-able, making them less prone to accidental drops. With Big Grips on duty, kids can be kids and parents can rest easy.

Griffin Lightboard for iPad

This cool little device changes your iPad into a drawing board, allowing your child to draw, write and play with ease. An art table and protective case in one, Griffin LightBoard makes your iPad a kid-safe activity centre. It’s easy to use and provides peace of mind while your child explores and creates.
