One Laptop Per Child might need to change its name, now that the organization is launching a $100 tablet. The nonprofit group will be introducing an 8-inch tablet that sells for less than $100.

The One Laptop Per Child Foundation (OLPC) makes low-cost portable computing devices primarily for school kids in developing countries.

The XO 3.0 tablet is the first tablet to be powered by solar cells. The XO tablet has special power circuitry that can be charged using an optional cover’s solar panel or using a hand crank that can provide 60 minutes of operation for every six minutes of cranking. This tablet for children in developing countries has multiple charging options – making the XO kids tablet a practical, low-priced educational tool.

The green ruggedized 8-inch solar tablet, is designed to give kids in the developing world access to modern education.

The child’s tablet will come in two display versions: a standard 8-inch 1024 x 768 LCD and an 8-inch PixelQi 1024×768 resolution sunlight-readable display. Connectivity ports include USB, mini USB, and audio in/out.

OLPC, has been developing the kids tablet over the last few years as a low-cost alternative to standard notebooks. The XO tablet, will provide network information to those in developing countries using just a fraction of the power that notebooks do.

Ideally, OLPC will sell these educational tablets in bulk to countries.
