The 7 inch tablet uses an Android operating system with a dual-core processor and has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of memory storage. The device also includes touch screen technology, front and rear cameras, a headset port, a card slot, a USB port and Wi-Fi capabilities. It is pre-loaded with XO Learning educational software that includes bilingual options and parental controls. Add-on packages including a personalized case and codes which unlock personalized software will also be available. The XO Learning Tablet is designed for use by children ages 3 to 12, and will be produced and marketed by electronics manufacturer Vivitar. It is expected to go on sale later this year at retail giant Wal-Mart.

This Android kids tablet is the latest offering by OLPC, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of children in the developing world by providing them access to educational technology and the Internet. OLPC relies on the sale of their products as well as public and private donations to fund their projects. Previous ventures have included the design and manufacture of durable laptops with Internet access that can operate on flexible power sources and withstand rough handling by their young owners. Their products have been distributed to children worldwide through campaigns such as OLPC’s “Give One Get One” campaign.
